SCIENCE
The science curriculum at St. Raymond School follows the guidelines of the Diocese of Oakland. In all grades, the following areas are studied:
1. Physical Science
2. Life Science
3. Earth Science
4. Environmental Science/Stewardship
5. Investigation and Experimentation
6. Health Science (also included in Physical Education curriculum)
In sixth through eighth grades, the scope and sequence is arranged in a general science format where students are exposed to the three main areas of science each year: Earth Science, Life Science, Physical Science. This allows for variety during the course of the year as well as building on material that becomes increasingly more complex over the three year period. At the conclusion of middle school, all standards are covered.
Specifically, the areas of study for grades 6, 7, 8 are:
Grade Six -Earth Science:
Plate Tectonics
Oceanography
Earth and Life History
Weathering
Astronomy
Solar Energy
Thermal Energy
Natural Resources
Health Science
Investigation and Experimentation
Grade Seven – Life Science
Biology
Structure on Function in Living Things
Botany
Human Biology
Genetics
Evolution
Ecology
Oceanography
Health Science
Stewardship/Environmental Science
Investigation and Experimentation
Grade Eight – Physical Science
Motion
Forces
Structure of Matter
Periodic Table
Reactions
Chemistry of Living Systems
Physical Principles in Living Systems
Density, Buoyancy, Fluids and Pressures
Waves
Light Waves
Sound Waves
Stewardship/Environmental Science
Health Science
Investigation and Experimentation
A major component of the science curriculum for all middle school students is the preparation for the annual science fair. In addition to the scientific experimentation which follows the scientific method, extensive research skills are developed. Research writing, citing sources, creating a bibliography, and peer editing as well as teacher editing are practiced and learned.
